Clean energy generation technology firm X-Energy Reactor has joined forces with engineering, testing and certification services company Kinectrics to design, construct and operate a new helium test facility in North America.
Believed to be one of the first commercial-scale facilities of its type in the region, the facility will test and verify performance of critical structures, systems and components of X-Energy’s Xe-100 advanced small modular nuclear reactor in helium-based high-temperature and high-pressure environments.
The Xe-100 will circulate helium gas to transfer heat from the reactor core through a heat exchanger to generate high-temperature steam that can be used to generate electricity to supply heat for industrial processes.
J Clay Sell, CEO of X-Energy, said the site is an integral part of testing systems and components in expected operating conditions – and for verifying their safety, operability, and reliability.
