Metal technology recently opened the globe’s largest hot isostatic pressing unit.
Metal Technology Co., Ltd, a speciality metals finishing company, recently opened a new factory at Himeji. The hot isostatic pressing unit (HIP) constitutes the largest facility worldwide. Operation commenced at the plant in January, with a large-scale argon supply facility within the site.
HIP units harness power from gaseous argon or nitrogen to remove internal defects in castings used in the sintering of powdered materials. The majority of applications are within heavy industry and industrial machinery; but it is also frequently utilised to pulverise materials used in aeronautics and aviation.
Metal Technology now owns 15 HIP units across Japan. The new facility in Himeji offers an internal diameter of 2.05m and a height of 4.2m, which renders it the world’s largest capacity. This translates to a single batch amounting to 25,000kg. Construction of the device began in 2007 and lasted three years. The facility was designed to accommodate large castings, which had previously been unable to receive HIP treatment. Overall investment in the premises reached ¥5bn, while the unit was imported from Sweden.
