Norway-based Hydro has joined forces with hydrogen technology company Fives to produce what the companies claim to be the world’s first batch of hydrogen-fuelled recycled aluminium.
The partnership aims to tackle carbon emissions in the aluminium sector by using green hydrogen as an emission-free fuel in the production process.
The clean fuel replaced natural gas for the recycling of aluminium during a test carried out at a casthouse in Hydro’s extrusion plant in Navarra, Spain.
Led by hydrogen experts from Hydro’s green hydrogen company Hydro Havrand, in partnership with Fives, the test is considered to be a ‘key step’ towards decarbonisation of industry.
