There is no alternative to blue and green hydrogen and such is the rising demand for clean energy that the world needs 20 projects on the scale of the NEOM megaproject, according to Air Products Chairman, President and CEO Seifi Ghasemi.
Speaking at the Barclays Industrial Select Conference, he said, “If you look in Europe, by 2030 they’re saying they want 1% of all fuel to be made with hydrogen – so if you do the maths, you come up with 20 NEOMs. The aspirations of the governments are so far ahead of the reality, but this will all become more evident in the next two-to-three years.”
He added that if the world is to decarbonise, there is no real alternative to both hydrogen technologies. “If you believe that, you know that the demand is there. So if Air Products has taken the risk of building an $8.5bn project in the desert, or $7bn project in Louisiana, and we are getting all the grief by being a first mover, we deserve the highest possible return that we can extract for the work.
“Since we believe we are the only viable producer, who is going to add product when people need it, then the more rebate until the date they need it, the higher price you’re going to get – and that’s obviously the game that we’re playing.”
