Known for its strong “rotten egg” odor at low concentrations, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a very flammable, highly corrosive, and toxic gas that can build up in low-lying areas and confined spaces, quickly overcoming unprotected workers.
Unfortunately, at higher concentrations, the gas no longer has an odour, making it even more dangerous.
“Very poisonous at even low concentrations, hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, extremely hazardous gas that can be rapidly absorbed by a worker’s lungs,” said Mark Stromme, editor of workplace safety content for J. J. Keller & Associates, Inc. “Exposure at very high concentrations can cause nearly instant death.”
