Waste-derived CO2 to be transformed into clean aviation fuels

Waste management company LIPOR could see one of the first synthetic eFuel production units in Europe implemented at its Energy Recovery Plant located near Porto, Portugal.

Intended to both revolutionise the Waste-to-Energy (WtE) industry and help decarbonise the aviation sector, the power-to-liquid facility at the Maia Energy Recovery Plant will produce green synthetic eFuel for the aviation industry from carbon dioxide (CO2 captured from the plant’s waste gas stream combined with green hydrogen.

The project, headed by a consortium of companies including LIPOR (Intermunicipal Waste Management of Greater Porto), P2X Europe and Veolia, aims to recycle up to 100,000 tonnes of captured biogenic CO2 during its first phase.

In addition to being converted into eFuels, the CO2 will be upgraded into synthetic green end products, such as drop-in eKerosene, eDiesel and specialty chemical products.
