Wärtsilä to supply reliquefaction to Excelerate FSRU retrofit

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will supply reliquefaction systems for retrofit installation onboard floating storage regasification units (FSRUs) owned by Excelerate Energy.

The retrofit project will improve the environmental footprint of Excelerate Energy’s FSRU operations. The order is expected to be booked by Q4 latest with equipment arriving early 2026.

The system to be delivered is Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Compact Reliq Double units, which is based on the reversed Brayton cycle technology.

It is designed to reliquefy boil-off gas and return them back to the cargo tanks, thus eliminating emissions and saving cargo at the same time.

The system is also fitted with the latest technology and applications to minimise maintenance and operational costs for the operator.

David Liner, COO at Excelerate Energy, said the project will help reduce the environmental footprint in all its operations.

Walter Reggente, VP Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, said it has demonstrated for many years that it has the technology to contribute to greener shipping operations.

Venture Global LNG recently secured around 1 Mtpa of LNG regasification capacity at the new Alexandroupolis LNG receiving terminal in Greece for five years from 2025.

The long-term terminal use agreement was signed with Gastrade. Venture Global LNG will account for around 25% of total terminal capacity, or approximately 12 cargoes annually.
