Wärtsilä pushes ahead with maritime CCS ambitions

As one of the leading partners in the Linking Carbon Capture and Storage (LINCCS) consortium, Finnish maritime services company Wärtsilä is to prioritise development of maritime carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies.

To drive the development forward, the Norwegian government will donate 111m Norwegian kroner to the LINCCS project to help reduce costs for new carbon storage facilities by 70% and to assist with decarbonisation of the maritime industry.

Wärtsilä will lead the project with support from Sustainable Energy Catapult Centre and SINTEF Energy and will see cross-over with developments from project partners including Aker Solutions, TotalEnergies and Equinor.

Recognising that the transition towards zero emissions will require the company to pioneer different technology solutions, Tamara de Gruyter, President, Marine Systems, Wärtsilä, said, “We are humbled and excited to be working with a strong group of companies who all have market-leading competencies to advance CCS as a solution that can enable a low-carbon future.”
