Transport group Volvo has signed a deal with Westport Fuel Systems Inc (Westport) to establish a joint venture which will advance Westport’s low- and zero-carbon fuel system technology.
Set to become operational in the second quarter of 2024, the JV will see the partners accelerate the commercialisation and global adoption of the High Pressure Direct Injection (HPDI) system, which can be used in vehicles with internal combustion engines to replace conventional fuels with biogas or hydrogen.
According to Lars Stenqvist, Chief Technology Office at Volvo Group, HPDI has been used on the road in Volvo trucks for over five years. He added that HPDI ‘is a proven technology that allows customers to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in liquefied biogas applications here and now and is a potential avenue for hydrogen.”
The system consists of an integrated ‘tank to tip’ solution based on diesel technology. An injector with a dual concentric needle design injects a small amount of pilot fuel into the cylinder, prior to the gas, to initiate ignition.
