Voith and Mehrer join forces on hydrogen compression for transport sector

Voith Group (Voith) and Mehrer Compression GmbH (Mehrer) have announced a strategic partnership focused on developing advanced compressors tailored for hydrogen applications.

Voith will leverage Mehrer’s compressor technology as they target hydrogen compression solutions of up to 900 bar. These high-pressure compressors are expected to serve multiple applications, including pipeline compression, trailer filling and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

“The partnership with Voith enables us to combine our decades of experience in oil-free compression with state-of-the-art drive technology. This brings us ever closer to our vision of a more sustainable future for the next generation,” said Jörg-Peter Mehrer, President of Mehrer Compression GmbH.

Both companies have experience in sustainable technology and emissions reduction, with Mehrer specialising in oil-free hydrogen and CO2 compression.

Voith recently launched a plug-and-drive hydrogen storage system for heavy-duty vehicles, approved for European road use.

The modular system offers high-pressure hydrogen storage designed to meet the energy needs of commercial transport while aiming to reduce refuelling frequency. Voith states that the storage system has been rigorously tested to meet European safety standards and is intended to support ongoing efforts to decarbonise the transport sector.

According to the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) initiative, the EU’s hydrogen market could reach 40 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030, supporting sectors like heavy-duty transport.

The European Commission aims for hydrogen to constitute up to 14% of the EU’s energy mix by 2050, reflecting growing investment in hydrogen infrastructure, storage, and transport solutions across member states.
