VITAGRO injects biomethane into Ukrainian gas transmission system for the first time

The VITAGRO Group of Companies, in collaboration with specialists from the Khmelnytsky branch of Gas Distribution Networks of Ukraine LLC, has supplied biomethane to Ukraine’s gas transmission system (GTS) for the first time.

“The team of VITAGRO ENERGY, together with specialists from the Gas Distribution Networks operator, successfully ensured the first launch of biomethane, and gas has already begun to flow into the gas transmission system,” the company stated. This achievement represents a first for Ukraine’s energy sector.

The biomethane plant is currently operating at 60-70% of its planned capacity. During this initial phase, around 6,000 cubic metres of biomethane are entering the gas distribution networks daily. The company anticipates reaching full operational capacity by the end of October 2024.

In parallel, the VITAGRO Group is working to establish biomethane exports. “The company already has all the necessary permits, and as soon as sufficient volumes are accumulated in gas storage facilities, we will immediately be able to start selling biomethane to foreign buyers,” a spokesperson explained.

Volodymyr Ivakhiv, head of renewable energy at VITAGRO, added that if all procedures proceed smoothly, Ukrainian biomethane exports could begin as early as November. “We also expect this to be a key step towards harmonising the domestic and European biomethane markets, similar to the electricity market,” Ivakhiv said.

Active collaboration is ongoing between various entities, including the Gas Distribution Networks, Ukrtransgaz, and the supplier of biomethane technology, to streamline the process. “I would also like to highlight the coordinated efforts of all market participants, partners, and employees of the company who made incredible efforts to make this event happen,” Ivakhiv said.

European biomethane

There are numerous biomethane projects underway globally, particularly in Europe, which is leading the charge in renewable gas production.

Europe saw a 37% increase in biomethane capacity in 2024, with over 1,500 biomethane plants now operating across the continent. This represents a growth of 32% compared to the previous year. Countries like France, Denmark, Germany, and Italy are at the forefront of this expansion.

For instance, France has nearly doubled its production capacity, while Denmark has plans to meet 100% of its gas demand through biomethane by 2030.

Through its REPowerEU plan, the European Commission targets 35 billion cubic meters (bcm) of biomethane production annually by 2030.
