Virginia plant shutdown could be ‘massive’ for CO2 market

gasworld understands the temporary shutdown of a plant critical to the carbon dioxide (CO2) business in the US Southeast could have a significant impact on supply from September onwards.

The Hopewell plant in Virginia is set to shut down for scheduled maintenance activities from late September, for up to eight weeks turnaround.

gasworld understands this would potentially affect three crude CO2 offtakers, namely Air Liquide, Linde and Messer.

According to data from CO2 View, the collective CO2 output from these three facilities would be circa 1,650 tonnes per day (tpd). This equates to around 3.5% of the total US CO2 market or 11% of the Southeast market, or approximately 75 truckloads of CO2 being pulled out of the supply chain daily.
