Valero, the world’s second largest corn ethanol producer, has agreed to join Summit Carbon Solutions’ proposed carbon capture and storage project, which spans a five-state region.
Under terms of a new agreement, eight of Valero’s ethanol facilities across Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and South Dakota will be incorporated into the project.
In turn, these sites will add an additional 1.1 billion gallons of ethanol per year and will result in the capture of 2.1 million metric tonnes of CO2 annually, reducing the carbon intensity of the ethanol market.
Bruce Rastetter, founder and Executive Chairman of Summit Agricultural Group, said, “By integrating Valero’s facilities into this project, we will make major strides in providing more than a billion gallons of low-carbon fuels to a marketplace hungry for the product.”
