Sixteen US States have filed a lawsuit against the US Government challenging the liquefied natural gas (LNG) export ban.
The extent of the plaintiffs – covering the States of Wyoming, West Virginia, Utah, South Carolina, Oklahama, Nebraska, Montana, Kansas, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Alaska, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana – underlines the cross-country opposition to the decision, and the “significant harms” such a ban will have on the US’ industry and economy.
A 60-page document lists 16 counts on the Texas Attorney General website. In a concluding clause (247), the document states, ‘The LNG Export Ban is not justified by any statutory authority and thus is beyond the President’s powers,’ following on from the 10th and 11thcounts, stating the ban is ‘arbitrary and capricious’, and 14th, remarking it is ‘unconstitutional’.
Most of the document analyses the impact the ban, announced on January 26, would have on each state, while reiterating the importance of LNG as an ‘economic engine’ to the US – and globally, given it has risen to become premier exporter in eight years – and its importance as a driver of GDP and job creation.
