US and India to invest in new fab and clean energies

The US and India are to expand the manufacturing and deployment of clean energies and key electronic technologies.

A new national security fab plant will be built manufacturing infrared, gallium nitride and silicon carbide semiconductors, under a strategic technology partnership between Bharat Semi, 3rdiTech, and the US Space Force.

It follows GlobalFoundries’ (GF) creation of the GF Kolkata Power Center in Kolkata, that will enhance mutually beneficial linkages in research and development in chip manufacturing, connected vehicles, internet of things devices, AI, and data centres.

More than $90m funding will be invested in the next five years at the US-India Global Challenges Institute to enhance R&D.

Both countries aim to work together to unlock $1bn of multilateral financing to support projects across the clean energy value chain for renewable energy, energy storage, power grid and transmission technologies, high efficiency cooling systems, zero emission vehicles, and other emerging clean technologies.

President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed collaboration on a new National Center for Hydrogen Safety in India and affirmed their intent to use the new Renewable Energy Technology Action Platform (RETAP) to enhance collaboration on clean energy manufacturing and global supply chains, including through public-private task forces on hydrogen and energy storage.

The Indian government – targeting chip market sales in excess of $55bn by 2026 – will  launch the next phase of the India Semiconductor Mission within six months. Besides enhanced funding scope, the focus will be developing new semiconductor hubs, such as in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

Tata Electronics is expanding its semiconductor manufacturing capabilities with two additional fab plants in Dholera, Gujarat.

SEMICON India, held this month in Greater Noida, Delhi NCR, attracted more than 250 exhibitors from across the global semiconductor supply chain.
