Union Engineering is proud of the fact it has more than 70 years of experience in the global CO2 business. Founded in 1933, the business was focused initially on the production of dry ice, and went on to become part of a major international gases company. It was during this ownership that the business for construction of CO2 recovery plants really came alive.
From this strong background, the 1970’s saw the beginnings of what is now Union Engineering’s current core business, to design, engineer and construct CO2 recovery plants. In 2002 the company went through a management buy-out and a major reorganization, which increased the business on the company’s core competences, and developed a highly flexible organization. The company say after this long history Union Engineering is well prepared to meet the challenges of today’s global gas market, securing the company’s position as a world leader for CO2 recovery technologies.

Technologies and competences
Union Engineering supplies plants according to customer needs with capacities ranging from 145 kg/hr up to more than 1000 tons per day. They say their flexible approach ensures that our customers are always getting the best possible solution as they understand the customer’s needs – optimizing the customer’s business and giving value for money. As also shown in their extensive reference list, they deliver CO2 plants all over the world, utilising their extensive know-how in providing service from quotation to commissioning and beyond.
Furthermore, regardless of the raw gas source, they say their extensive range of purification technologies will guarantee that the final CO2 product meets the strictest quality requirements for food grade and industrial grade CO2.

US subsidiary
As a result of positive signals from the US market and in order to be able to provide better service to US based customers, Union Engineering is opening a subsidiary in Atlanta, Georgia in the USA in 2007. With this new office, Union Engineering will have offices on four continents, and combined with an extensive network of representatives in key markets, Union Engineering say they can now provide the strongest world-wide customer support ever.

Economically feasible CO2 recovery from PSA-off gas on hydrogen plants
2007 will also be the year where the first CO2 recovery plant using Union Engineering’s new FlashCO2 technology will be put in commercial operation. The FlashCO2 technology has been developed with the objective to make CO2 recovery from medium-rich CO2 sources economically feasible – for instance PSA-off gas on hydrogen plants. By an innovative combination of well-proven processes, the new FlashCO2 technology significantly reduces the energy consumption typically associated with the recovery of CO2 from these types of sources. The demand for this new technology is expected to be high, especially as the demand for new hydrogen plants is experiencing high growth rates.
2006 was a busy year for the company with lots of projects and a high level of productivity, which is expected to continue in the future. Union Engineering’s extensive experience and know-how form the basis for continued development of innovative and high quality CO2 recovery technologies. Moving forward the focus will be on exploiting and optimising this foundation to create value for customers, employees and other stakeholders.
