The UAE may be one of the largest fossil fuel producers but delegates attending the MENA Industrial Gases Conference in Abu Dhabi last week were left in no doubt about the efforts the Gulf state is now taking to establish itself as a major low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia hub.
Dr. Faye Al Hersh, Head of Business Development – UAE Green Hydrogen at Masdar, said the UAE’s low-carbon hydrogen policy has been in effect since January 2024.
“Some of the important key concepts are clean electricity clusters – so that’s where renewable energy plants that would be required for the supply of competitive power for hydrogen production, can be located at scale,” she said.
“What will also be introduced will be ‘hydrogen oases’, areas where hydrogen production and uses, at scale, can be located – the idea is to have economies of scale, and benefit from common infrastructure and utilities, and synergies as well.
