President Donald Trump has announced a new energy partnership with Japan that will see liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from the $44bn Alaska LNG project.
The news was announced during a joint press conference attended by President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, where Trump referenced a “joint venture” between the US and Japan.
“Japan will soon be importing historic new shipments of clean American LNG in record numbers…” President Trump said.
We’re talking about the pipeline in Alaska, which is the closest point of major oil and gas to Japan by far… We’re talking about a joint venture of some type between Japan and us having to do with Alaska oil and gas.”
The Alaska LNG project is being develop by the Alaska Gasline Development Corporation and is expected to produce 20 million tonnes per annum of LNG.
The output is based on the project’s capacity to process approximately 3.5 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas, transportation via an 807-mile, 42-inch pipeline from Alaska’s North Slope to the liquefaction facility in Nikiski.
If the project goes ahead, it hopes to start natural gas deliveries by 2031.
Alaska LNG has already received federal approvals, including authorisation from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and permits from the Department of the Interior for rights-of-way permits across federal lands
Alaska’s Governor Dunleavy said, “President Trump has been a steadfast supporter of Alaska and its ability to be the solutions to many of America’s issues through its vast natural gas resources, its geopolitical position in the Artic and the Pacific, and Alaska’ ability to help its Asian neighbours such as Japan.”
In the last few months, Alaska’s Senator Sullivan has pitched the importance of the Alaska LNG Project to President Trump and his cabinet officials and members of his national security team.
On his first day in office, President Trump signed an Alaska-specific executive order, “Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential,” which declared the Alaska LNG project a top priority of the Trump administration.
