Danish energy transition technology specialist Topsoe has been awarded €94 million ($102.5m) in EU funding to build an electrolyser manufacturing facility in Herning, Denmark.
Delivered through the EU’s Innovation Fund, the investment is the largest in Topsoe’s history and marks a first-of-its-kind in solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) manufacturing in the Danish city.
Equipped with an initial capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), the facility will build energy efficient SOECs essential in the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
The technology is also seen as key to decarbonising hard-to-abate industries such as steel, mining and long distance transportation that account for around 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
