Topsoe ‘largest’ electrolyser plant to launch year end

Topsoe’s SOEC electrolyser plant will come on stream at the end of this year in Henning, Denmark.

Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer, confirmed the news in a video ahead of the opening of the upcoming World Hydrogen Week at the Bella Center, Copenhagen (September 30-October 4).

It will be the world’s largest electrolyser manufacturing plant with 500 megawatt (MW) capacity per year, with an option to expand to 5 gigawatt (GW), and help support the roll out of commercial-size Power-to-X solutions.

“We have seen some slowdown with FID and additional considerations – not over if they will happen, but how fast they will happen. We are heavily into discussions over low-carbon with very large projects, as well as smaller ones with green ammonia,” said Scaltritti.

She attributed the slowdown to three reasons; regulatory uncertainty, return on investment and ‘existing and perceived’ technology challenges. Topsoe’s revenue for the first six months totalled DKK 4,150 million, down from DKK 4,664 million in the same period last year.

Scarletti said it is also working on a plant in Virginia, yet to reach FID, and collaborating with US-based First Ammonia to put SOEC at the heart of green ammonia plants by 2025.

Topsoe has also signed a joint development agreement with Saudi Aramco to demonstrate eREACT™ technology for low-carbon hydrogen production. The technology is an emerging one that converts natural gas into low-carbon hydrogen using renewable electricity, and a demonstration plant will be built at the Shaybah Natural Gas Liquids recovery plant in KSA.

The company continues to see increasing demand for our solutions for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel as well as hydrogen produced from either renewable energy or natural gas with carbon capture and storage.
