Decarbonisation specialist Topsoe has supplied essential technology to the US’ largest producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) as part of a deal that aims to drive the airline sector towards Net Zero emissions by 2030.
The Indiana-based Calumet will use Topsoe’s HydroFlex technology to revamp its existing refinery unit at Great Falls to produce renewable jet fuel and diesel.
Generating around 15,000 barrels a day, the site uses waste oils and other low value feedstocks to produce the fuels.
According to the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA), 120 billion gallons of SAF per year is needed for the airline sector to achieve Net Zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050.
