Global eFuel developer Arcadia eFuels (Arcadia) has chosen chemicals and energy company Sasol and carbon emission reduction specialist Topsoe as technology providers for the first commercial eFuels plant in Denmark.
The project aims to reduce carbon emissions in the hard-to-abate fossil-fuelled aviation industry, a sector responsible for around 2.5% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
By supplying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the Danish and European aviation markets, the partners will help meet the EU mandate of 1.2% RFNBO (Renewable Fuels of non-Biological Origin) or eFuels in 2030.
According to figures from the International Aviation Transport Association (IATA), only 300m litres of SAF was produced in 2022. For the airline sector to achieve Net Zero CO2 emissions by 2050 industry must produce an estimated 450 billion litres per year.
