NW Natural and Modern Hydrogen have unveiled a new three-year pilot project that will produce clean hydrogen while capturing solid carbon in Portland, Oregon.
Located at NW’s Natural Central Resource Centre, the pilot uses a process called methane pyrolysis to produce hydrogen and capture solid carbon.
The hydrogen generated at the site is blended with natural gas and delivered via existing energy infrastructure. The solid carbon will also be utilised, with it being incorporated into Modern Hydrogen’s asphalt products, which are used in applications such as paving and road repairs.
