Energy jobs are getting more complex and technologically focused. But it’s not just technical know-how – the whole way we make, manage and use energy is changing.
Governments need to figure out how to teach new skills, both quickly and sustainably. By 2030, over 10 million new jobs will need to be filled.
There are 67 million people currently employed in the energy industry worldwide, and already more employees in clean energy than in the ’traditional’ fossil fuel sector.
Speaking on the Interchange Recharged podcast, Caleigh Andrews, Energy Analyst and Modeller at the IEA, said, “The main takeaway is we are seeing skill shortages beginning to emerge as a bottleneck to delivering the targets and outcomes we want from the energy transition – and we expect this to only become a bigger problem in the future as we progress, especially as building out clean energy installations is going to require a massive amount of skilled labour that we just don’t have yet.
