Summit strikes CO2 supply deal with Infinium for e-fuels

Summit Carbon Solutions (Summit), the company behind a proposed 668-mile-long carbon dioxide (CO2) pipeline, has signed a deal with electrofuels (e-fuels) producer Infinium to supply its facilities in North Dakota or South Dakota.

Specifically, Summit will supply Infinium with 670,000 metric tonnes per annum of CO2.

Infinium’s e-fuel production method combines green hydrogen and captured CO2 to produce petroleum-based products such as sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF), eDiesel and eNaptha.

Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, said, “As the demand for e-fuels continues to rise, it is essential to secure reliable and scalable CO2 sources. Summit’s infrastructure will supply the CO2 needed to scale production and advance e-fuels as a key part of the US’s energy future.”

According to market research, the US e-fuel market generated a revenue of $25.2bn in 2023 and is expected to reach $3.5 trillion by 2050.

Lee Blank, CEO of Summit Carbon Solutions, said the partnership shows how CO2 infrastructure drives energy independence and enables new markets for ethanol producers, farmers, and rural communities.

“CO2 is a commodity with growing value, and Infinium’s eFuels technology is an important piece of the puzzle. By providing a reliable CO2 supply, we’re helping unlock opportunities that support domestic energy production and economic growth.”

Infinium is yet to announce any plans or details for e-fuel production sites in North or South Dakota. In March 2024, it did, however, launch its commercial-scale facility in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The plant is part of the company’s Project Pathfinder, an initiative to produce synthetic, ultra-low carbon e-fuels that can be used for heavy transportation and chemical processes.

Infinium had previously signed a similar agreement with carbon management company Navigator CO2 for the supply of 600,000 tonnes per annum of biogenic CO2 from Navigator’s Heartland Greenway CO2 pipeline.

Since the signing, however, Navigator cancelled plans to develop the 1,300-mile project due to the unpredictable nature of the regulatory and government processes involved.

This suggests the Infinium-Navigator agreement has been terminated.
