Delegates attending the opening of the World Biogas Summit and Expo 2023 heard a mix of hard-hitting warnings and opportunities to underline the central importance of turning potential into delivery to meet decarbonisation targets.
Charlotte Morton OBE, Chief Executive of the World Biogas Association, drawing on IPCC research, said, “We don’t have a moment to lose. It is abundantly clear we are in the emergency room, on life support, and running out of time scarily fast. We must reduce carbon in the atmosphere drastically in an incredibly short timeframe, otherwise large parts of the planet will become uninhabitable.”
But she said the biogas sector is a critical part of the only solution that can buy us a bit more time. “We need to be laser focused, collaborate, innovate and implement best practice everywhere,” she said, while emphasising the importance of standardisation.
One of the major challenges is capturing the 105 billion tonnes of human waste, which could drastically reduce methane levels. The focus on food will also increase, in a world where food security “is the next big crisis,” she warned.
