Skytree grows North American footprint with new HQ and office

Carbon dioxide (CO2) technology specialist Skytree is strengthening its presence in the North American market, having opened a North American headquarters in Toronto, Canada, and a new office in Nashville, Tennessee.

News of the two sites follows a phase of expansion for Skytree in Europe, having grown from 20 to 90 employees and spent that last decade perfecting its onsite CO2 generation technology for European markets.

Skytree has already put a foot in the North American market but is now growing further in the region. The company has previously announced partnerships with Deep Sky and Fieldless Farms, and its direct air capture (DAC) has already been deployed in the region.

Skytree’s Vice-President of Strategy for North America, Elena Nikonova, will lead the Toronto office and its expansion. She described the news as an important next step for North America as it looks to partner with more climate businesses with CO2 utilisation and removal goals.

“Both the US and Canadian markets show strong interest in our DAC solutions. We will further develop this pipeline of projects and help our US business development team based in Nashville.”

The company’s regional headquarters in Canada is expected to employ at least 80 people in the next three years in business development, services, operations and R&D. SkyTree has already confirmed plans to open a second location in Canada, too.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow congratulated the company on its North American expansion.

“Reducing fossil fuel reliance is a priority as we all work towards a sustainable, net-zero future. As part of Toronto’s passionate climate-focused tech community, I am confident that Skytree will make a meaningful impact not only here but across the globe.”

Speaking at gasworld’s North American CO2 Summit in Nashville, Rob Van Straten, CEO at Skytree, emphasised the need to remove levels of CO2 in our atmosphere for the future.

Skytree is driving the circular economy by transforming COfrom a waste product into a valuable resource, generating CO2 from the atmosphere at the location where that CO2 is needed.

Earlier this year (March 2024), the company confirmed plans to bring to market its newest decentralised direct air capture (DAC) unit to capture larger volumes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Releasing its Skytree Stratus model, the company says that the unit’s fully modular nature allows for multiple units to be combined into a ‘Skytree Stratus Hub’ to meet larger volume needs.

The unit can capture up to 1.2 tonnes of CO2 per day to meet the needs of large greenhouses and vertical farms.
