Singapore’s new Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who is being sworn in on Wednesday (May 15), will be greeted with a full in-tray as the Lion City looks to reposition itself domestically, regionally and internationally.
Priorities for Wong, who replaces Lee Hsien Loong after 20 years, will be to keep Singapore secure, tackle immediate concerns around the cost of living and jobs, and to translate the ‘Forward Singapore’ aspirations into concrete programmes.
In telling remarks as he unveiled his new cabinet this week, the city state’s fourth Prime Minister – who was formerly Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister – acknowledged that “more and more, many of the issues we deal with will involve close linkages between the economy and society”. GDP is projected to increase between 1-3% this year, on the back of 1.1% growth in 2023.
