Two years on, the only finalist in the Energy Department’s (DOE’s) H2 Refuel H-Prize competition is making strides, having already produced and dispensed enough hydrogen (H2) to drive 4,200 miles in a fuel cell car.
The H2 Refuel H-Prize, launched by the Energy Department (DOE) in October 2014, was devised to challenge American innovators to develop small-scale H2 generation and refuelling systems.
The SimpleFuelTM team, consisting of McPhy Energy North America, PDC Machines and Ivys, was the only finalist in the contest and is now in the initiation of the testing phase, with their system already producing and dispensing over 70kg of H2.
SimpleFuel built a system that produces up to 5kg of H2 a day via electrolysis, which is enough to completely fill the tank of a standard fuel cell vehicle (FCV) for a 300-mile trip. In addition, it dispenses H2 at 700 bar pressure.
