LNG Bunkering is the practice of providing liquefied natural gas fuel to a ship for its own consumption. The key advantage of LNG as a fuel is the vast reduction in pollutant caused by the more traditional method of fueling ships such as heavy fuel oil, marine diesel fuel (MDO) and marine gas oil (MGO).
Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd and Shell International Petroleum company Ltd recently announced the successful bunkering of the ZIM SAMMY OFER Container vessel with liquefied natural gas (LNG).
ZIM reported that the vessel was bunkered at Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) on 26 March. This was the first LNG bunkering operation in Jamaican waters.
The ZIM SAMY OFER is the first in a series of ten 15,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships which ZIM plans to deploy on their ZCP trade line. ZIM’s current fleet of LNG dual-fuelled vessels have a small methane slip of around 0.2 per cent. The vessels are equipped with ME-GI (M-type, Electronically Controlled Gas Injection) two-stroke engines.
