With UK Hydrogen Week drawing to a close, we take a deeper look at latest developments, and assess issues affecting the sector’s performance.
Government policy
The UK – under the aegis of the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) – is committed to decarbonisation and values hydrogen’s role within it. Hydrogen presents a massive economic opportunity for the UK, potentially unlocking over 12,000 jobs and up to £11bn of investment by 2030, and could provide 20-35% of UK energy demand by 2050.
But even allowing for the positive soundings with hydrogen, for many commentators, whether through planning, infrastructure, technical or economic complexity, or a combination, the UK has so far been too slow off the blocks.
