Sapphire secures DOE approval for LNG exports through 2050

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) specialist Sapphire Gas Solutions has been granted approval from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export domestically produced LNG.

The approval allows the Texas-based companyto export up to 51.75 billion cubic feet of LNG annually to free-trade agreement (FTA) and non-free trade agreement (non-FTA) countries. Its can export LNG under a long-term, multi-contract authorisation until 2050.

Sam Thigpen, CEO of Sapphire Gas Solutions, shared his excitement over the approval.

“This approval not only strengthens our commitment to expanding the global reach of US-produced LNG but also underscores our ability to deliver innovative energy solutions that contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting energy security around the world.”

In January 2024, US President Joe Biden put a pause on LNG exports, in a move that was described as “devastating” for international relations. The US was the world’s largest LNG exporter in 2023.

However, exports have now started gaining approval. In September 2024, New Fortress Energy was the first company to be granted authorisation for LNG export since the pause.

Sapphire uses ISO containers to ship its LNG. With this method, the product is shipped just like any other cargo. This avoided LNG cargo being offloaded at onshore tanks and then transported to the destination via trucks.

Additionally, the company has highlighted its focus on delivering critical energy supplies to countries that need them. The ongoing situation in countries like Ukraine and Israel, where infrastructure has been severely damaged, for example, has further intensified demand for reliable energy solutions.

“Sapphire Gas Solutions is stepping up to meet the urgent energy needs of regions hit hardest by war, natural disasters, and supply shortages both here in the US and now globally,” the company’s CEO added.

“By offering a turnkey solution that can be rapidly deployed, we’re able to deliver energy where it’s needed most, helping support disaster recovery and critical infrastructure restoration.”

Sapphire’s authorisation extends through December 31, 2050, with flexibility to operate under both long-term and short-term contracts. The company’s operations will draw from multiple natural gas facilities across the US, leveraging the country’s vast natural gas pipeline network.
