Global gas systems specialist Oxair has delivered on-site oxygen and nitrogen generators the world’s sole ethical cobalt mining operation in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia.
With the demand for energy storage increasing and renewable power projects generating more electricity, cobalt – an essential component of batteries – is set to play an ever-increasing role.
Operated by battery-grade cobalt producer Cobalt Blue, the Broken Hill Cobalt Project is planned as a large-scale ethical mining operation that aims to be one of the largest cobalt producers in the world.
In the mining process, nitrogen is employed in the kiln to thermally decompose pyrite concentrate, a process that releases sulphur as a gaseous by-product.
