Ørsted is scrapping the development of its FlagshipONE e-fuels project and focusing its efforts on renewable hydrogen.
Mads Nipper, Group President and CEO of Ørsted, said the liquid e-fuel market in Europe is “developing slower than expected”, after previously saying e-methanol was the best solution available to decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors like global shipping.
The FlagshipONE project, planned for Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, was expected to start operations next year – two years after achieving FID – producing 55,000 tonnes of e-methanol annually for shipping by combining renewable hydrogen and captured carbon dioxide (CO2).
In another setback, the construction of the onshore substation for the US offshore wind project Revolution Wind has been delayed, pushing commercial operations back to 2026.
