Intelligent power and sensing technologies firm onsemi has opened a $1.3bn semiconductor fabrication plant in East Fishkill, New York.
The site is onsemi’s largest manufacturing fab in the US and was acquired from fellow semiconductor manufacturing firm GlobalFoundries. Over 1,000 new jobs will be created as a result of the purchase.
onsemi President and CEO Hassane El-Khouryand says the move means the company now owns the only 12-inch power-discrete and image sensor fab in the US.
The site also adds advanced CMOS capabilities – including 40 nm and 65 nm technology nodes with specialised processing capabilities required for image sensor production – to the company’s manufacturing profile.
