Ethanol production firm Cardinal Ethanol has formed a joint venture with carbon capture specialist Vault 44.01 to develop and operate a new carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and sequestration (CCS) project at Cardinal’s ethanol facility near Union City, Indiana.

Under the name One Carbon Partnership, the joint venture hopes to construct a facility to capture CO2 generated from the ethanol production process and safely and permanently store those emissions underground in a secure geologic reservoir.

As it stands, Cardinal’s facility produces approximately 135 million gallons of ethanol per year, generating approximately 400,000 metric tonnes of CO2 as a by-product of the corn fermentation process. The effort hopes to substantially reduce these emissions.

Jeff Painter, CEO of Cardinal Ethanol, said the partnership aligns with the company’s commitment to lower its carbon impact and keeps it on-track to producing zero emission liquid fuels.
