Oil sands enters the ’Hydrogen Economy’

Hydrogen is showing an ever greater role in converting the oil sands of Alberta into premium grade light crude oil as Ian Potter of Alberta Research Council commented ˜hydrogen is critical for Alberta.

With currently hydrogen output at 770,000 tonnes per year serving 1 million barrels per day of oil, hydrogen is increasing playing a significant role in developing the largely untapped oil reserves. Future oil output is forecast at 3 million barrels per day pushing hydrogen output to 2.8 million tones.

To convert the oil sands in to crude oil, hydrogen which is extracted from either natural gas or bitumen, is added to the sands creating light crude oil fetching high prices on the global market.

Hydrogen is not only seen as the clean energy source of the future but is currently playing a major role in current energy production.
