Nikkiso unveils new hydrogen station in California with SunLine

Nikkiso Clean Energy & Industrial Gases (CE&IG) has opened a new liquid hydrogen station in Thousand Palms, California.

The station was opened in partnership with bus service provider SunLine Transit Agency, which will fuel its fleet of 32 hydrogen buses at the new site.

Nikkiso CE&IG President and CEO, Adrian Ridge, said that the partnership supports critical infrastructure needed in California to advance the hydrogen economy.

“The station will be considered the gold standard for modern hydrogen fuelling station design, providing a blueprint for other transit hubs transitioning to or adding hydrogen fuelling options.”

Nikkiso has been manufacturing and installing hydrogen stations since 2002. In 2025, the company hopes to have delivered more than 35 permanent hydrogen stations globally.

The company’s technology provides 24/7 hydrogen fuelling. The SunLine site has dual-hose dispensers that meet H35 and H70 fuelling protocols and can fuel in less than 10 minutes.

Mona Babauta, CEO and General Manager at SunLine Transit Agency, said, “This station represents a significant milestone on our journey to convert our entire fleet to hydrogen fuel cell buses for the benefit of our customers, our community, and the planet.”

SunLine Transit hopes to open a third dual-hose dispensing unit for public use in the next few weeks. The station will be located between Los Angeles and Phoenix and will support cars, long-haul trucks and buses to fuel during long-distance routes.
