Eddyline Brewery has become one of the first New Zealand-based craft brewers to install carbon capture technology for a more sustainable and reliable source of carbon dioxide (CO2) for brewing.
Earthly Labs, a Chart Industries company, implemented its CiCi® Oak technology at the brewery. The technology allows Eddyline Brewery to capture waste CO2 produced during fermentation, purify it, and reuse it to carbonate the beer, purge tanks, clean kegs, and package beer.
The installation is one of many first-of-a-kind green initiatives implemented by Eddyline as it looks to advance its sustainable operations. Just last month, it won 18 awards at the New Zealand Beer Awards for having beers made with 100% recovered CO2.
Mic Heynekamp, Co-founder of Eddyline Brewery, notes that it is wasteful to be producing CO2 that is usable yet venting it into the environment. He added, “Recapturing CO2 is a better way for the planet and creates superb beer, too.”
