A satellite set to launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket today (4th March) is designed to help safeguard the Earth’s climate by detecting harmful methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.
When it comes to climate change, carbon dioxide (CO2) is often seen as the biggest threat. However, the dangers of methane are coming to the fore.
Methane holds a global warming potential around 28 times greater than CO2. This means that methane traps more heat than CO2 on a per molecule basis.
Developed by a team of scientists, environmentalists and aerospace engineers, the $88m project will provide a view of methane emitted from oil and gas fields, agricultural facilities and landfills.
