New BCGA President highlights challenges

Newly appointed British Compressed Gases Association (BCGA) President Chris Street outlined the need to build a strong organisational culture, encourage diversity and embrace novel technologies at the opening of the 2024 annual conference today (May 16).

Taking over the reins from David Hurren, who steps down after two years, Street said “what worked yesterday may not work today, and may considerably change the way we work tomorrow”. The BCGA’s Future Leaders Committee is now its largest, with 60 members.

“We need to ensure that we help the leaders of tomorrow, embrace new technology and keep ourselves relevant, and we’ve got to fully embrace renewable energies. It really is an exciting time for our industry,” added Street, who has over 40 years’ industry experience, and been on the BCGA Council for six years.

“We’re entering a new period of time – I was reading a book from an eminent futurologist who wrote that we will experience 20,000 years of progress this century compared with the last one. You might say ‘that makes no sense’, but then you think that we went from the first manned flight to the Voyager Satellite that’s gone out 15 billion miles, as an example of immense change that’s happened over the last 100 years or so.”
