Nel Hydrogen US lands electrolyser order from Scottish hydrogen hub

Hydrogen technology company Nel Hydrogen US has secured an order for a 2.5 megawatt (MW) containerised proton exchange membrane (PEM) unit for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project in the north-east of Scotland. It is the company’s second significant electrolyser order in the first quarter.

The green hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility is being delivered through a joint venture between energy giant BP and Aberdeen City Council.

Hydrasun, which specialises in fluid transfer, power and control systems, awarded the contract following its successful bid to design and integrate the hydrogen refuelling station and associated infrastructure.

Neil Thompson, CEO at Hydrasun, said awarding the initial contracts for major equipment packages for the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project is a key milestone for the hydrogen market and a boost for the supply chain.

The first phase of the hub involves building a hydrogen refuelling facility for buses and trucks, powered by a solar farm. The aim is to produce over 800kg of green hydrogen per day in this phase.

Phase two, by 2030, could see production scaled up to supply over three tonnes per day of green hydrogen for road, rail, freight and marine, while the third phase could scale up further to supply hydrogen for heat in buildings and potentially for export.

The order is another boost for Nel Hydrogen US, which received an order for two containerised PEM electrolyser units, worth about $7m, at the end of January.

The two 2.5MW MC500 electrolysers will be used to produce hydrogen for a new steel mill in the US. The undisclosed customer, one of the largest US steel producers, already uses Nel’s PEM electrolysers to generate hydrogen at two other sites in the US.
