Lafarge Zementwerke, a member of LafargeHolcim Group, OMV, Verbund and Borealis have co-signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the joint planning and construction of carbon capture and utilisation plant in Austria.
Under the project titled ‘Carbon2ProductAustria’, the companies hope to create a cross sectorial value chain and operate a full-scale plant by 2030 which will capture almost 100% of the annually emitted 700,000 tonnes of CO2 from Lafarge’s cement plant in Mannersdorf.
In combination with green hydrogen produced by Verbund, the captured CO2 will be transformed by OMV to renewable based hydrocarbons which can be used to produce renewable-based fuels or utilised as a feedstock to manufacture plastics.
Commenting on the project, José Antonio Primo, CEO of Lafarge, said, “We are committed to leading the industry in reducing carbon emissions and shifting towards low-carbon construction.”
