A fertiliser plant in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, has increased its production thanks to an offering from Siemens.
Thanks to the innovative solution from Siemens, and other energy and equipment optimisations, the Profertil fertiliser plant increases production of urea by 11% and ammonia by 9% using the same amount of energy.
Water consumption is also reduced by 6%. Profertil is an amalgamation of the state-owned Argentinian oil company YPF and the Canadian fertiliser company Agrium.
Most of this increase in efficiency is made possible by a highly efficient model STC-GV (80-6) compressor, an SGT-600 industrial gas turbine, a 13-megawatt (MW) generator, and a NEM heat recovery steam generator. The HRSG secures optimal steam generation for chemicals production from the gas turbine’s exhaust heat. Profertil uses the generated electricity directly for chemicals production, reducing the power purchased.
