Monjasa has undertaken LNG bunkering in Dubai this month, claiming it is a first for the UAE and Middle East.
It delivered around 3,000 cbm of LNG to three cryogenic tanks in the 185,000GT Costa Smeralda at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal B. With one complete LNG tank filling, the cruise liner can be powered for at least 2.5 weeks.
Monjasa chartered the LBV, Green Zeebrugge (5,000 cbm) for the operations, with official bunkering permits issued by the Dubai Maritime Authority & Dubai Ports Authority.
The ship is operating on its winter season until the end of February, offering one-week cruises from Dubai to Muscat (Oman), Doha (Qatar) and Abu Dhabi, before sailing onto the Mediterranean for European and African schedules in the spring.
Monjasa will continue working with UAE authorities, energy companies and shipowners on further developing adequate LNG bunkering infrastructure for the benefit of the increasing dual-fuelled merchant fleet, as the UAE aims to become a leading shipping hub for alternative fuels.
ADNOC Logistics and Services has also agreed chartering out an LNG carrier, the Shandong Juniper (72,740dwt), to Monjasa for nine months as a Floating Storage Unit (FSU).
Earlier this week ADNOC Gas and its subsidiaries signed a $450m (AED1.653bn) three-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement with JERA Global Markets.
The LNG will be supplied from ADNOC Gas’ Das Island liquefaction facility, which has a production capacity of approximately 6.0 million tons per annum (mtpa). As the world’s third longest-operating LNG plant, Das Island has shipped over 3,500 LNG cargoes worldwide since beginning operations.
Fatema Al Nuaimi, CEO of ADNOC Gas, said, “This agreement builds on the robust UAE-Japan energy relationship and decades of collaboration between ADNOC Gas and JERA solidifying our shared commitment to ensuring energy security and enabling a lower-carbon future. We will continue to support Japan’s energy needs and reinforce our position as a reliable partner in the global LNG market.”
