Marine fuels supplier Monjasa has carried out the United Arab Emirates’ and the Middle East region’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering.
Taking place on 4th January at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal B, the operation saw the Monjasa-chartered LBV Green Zeebrugge pull alongside the Costa Smeralda cruise line vessel to deliver around 3,000 cubic metres of LNG.
Monjasa began laying the groundwork for this milestone in December 2024 with the arrival of Green Zeebrugge in Dubai, following its departure from Amsterdam. After inspections by Port Rashid authorities, the Dubai Maritime Authority issued the required bunkering permits on 27th December.
Looking ahead, Monjasa plans to collaborate with UAE authorities and energy companies to expand LNG bunkering infrastructure, addressing the growing demand from dual-fuelled vessels.
Dubai Ports Authority CEO Capt. Ibrahim Al Blooshi hailed the development as a step towards sustainability, adding, “By leading the way with Dubai’s first LNG bunkering operation, we are setting a new benchmark for environmental responsibility while positioning our port as a global leader in sustainable maritime practices.”
To support the project, Monjasa has partnered with ADNOC Logistics and Services (ADNOC L&S), chartering the Shandong Juniper, an LNG carrier, as a floating storage unit for nine months.
