MOL receives AiP for first wind-assisted LNG ship

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has been awarded an approval in principle (AiP) by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) for the first LNG carrier to be powered by a wind-assisted propulsion system.

The ship has a cargo tank capacity of 174,000 cubic metres (cbm) and equipped with two Wind Challenger sails, with Hanwha Ocean undertaking the design work.

The companies conducted a risk assessment evaluating placement of the sails, their impact on visibility, emergency operation procedures, and other safety measures. Gaztransport et Technigaz SA (GTT) is designing the vessel’s cargo tank.

As part of its sustainability drive, the group plans to launch 25 vessels equipped with the Wind Challenger by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035.
