The World Biogas Summit 2023 debated ways to accelerate production globally and how best to address issues of policy, regulation and standards.
On the panel were Maureen Walsh, Director of Federal Policy at the American Biogas Council (remotely); Kunal Shah, Chief Growth Officer and Managing Director, Asia, at Anaergia; Dr. Gerard Ostheimer, Global Lead for Sustainable Bioenergy at BioFuture Campaign; and Nikhil Moghe, Partner at KPMG, India (remotely).
A simple slide in Shah’s presentation encapsulated the huge opportunity: current global production is around 198m MMbtu and global demand is forecasted to reach 8bn MMbtu by 2040.
Walsh set the scene in the US, saying it currently has 2,300 operational biogas systems, 276 Renewable Gas (RNG) projects (up 47% on 2021) and more than 15,000 potential new biogas systems. Wastewater is both the largest current and potential sector (1,269 and 4,000), followed by Landfills (645, 470), on Farm (332, 8,600) and Food Scrap (66, 2000).
