MHI Group to explore CO2 capture for aluminium industry

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Group and its engineering company, MHI Engineering, have undertaken a study into the feasibility of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the aluminium smelting process at a plant operated by Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C (Alba), a major Bahrain-based aluminium producer.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the companies on March 28th will see MHIENG applying its KM CDR Process carbon capture technology – jointly developed with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KEPCO) – to the Alba plant. 

Marking the world’s first application of CO2 capture technology in the aluminium industry, the agreement aims to assess the technology’s commercial opportunities, in addition to helping to advance the Bahrain’s decarbonisation efforts. 

At the signing ceremony, signatory Shaikj Daij bn Salman bin Daij Al Khalifa commented, “This MoU will play a fundamental role as we want to be accelerators and embed sustainability considerations in our operations to be more environmentally responsible and inclusive.”
