A hydrogen proposition that is mobile, scalable and energy efficient was among the presentations delivered at the Decarbonisation Summit in New Jersey last week.
Mack Hopen, Commercialisation Manager at Modern Hydrogen, outlined to delegates the benefits of methane pyrolysis – the non-oxidative decomposition of methane.
“You can do it with heat, with plasma, or electricity, with catalysts or without, but the main point is you’re taking CH4 and breaking it down into its constitutent carbon and hydrogen,” he said.
“It’s got about an eighth of the energy intensity to get a kilo of hydrogen out than electrolysis, you’re just working from a higher energy feedstock, and avoid the CO2 production that would be typically involved with steam methane reforming.”
